The book is about Maurice Hall. Maurice grows up a bit uncertain of who he is, but as he grows older, he realizes that he is gay. He lives in England in a time where gay men is not acceptable at all.
During his university days, Maurice fell in love with a fellow named Clive Durham. They had a strong relationship, but they kept it a secret from the world. Clive shows Maurice a text from ancient Greek that is about homosexuality. Maurice wants to keep having this close relationship with Clive, but Clive wants to marry, which he eventually does. He marries a woman and keeps his sexuality a secret, which breaks Maurice’s heart.
Maurice becomes a stockbroker and goes on with his life. He used to be Christian, but is not anymore. Despite this, he works at a boxing center for young boys that is held by a Christian community. Maurice tries to cure himself of his “sickness,” but it does not work; he is still gay.
Maurice meets Alec, and they grow close. One time Alec comes to Maurice’s bedroom and they spend the night together. The two men has some struggles in their relationship, but they end up being even closer.
Alec decides to emigrate to Argentina. Maurice is heartbroken. They will never see each other again. Maurice goes to the dock to say goodbye to Alec, but he cannot find him. He then goes to Alec’s house and finds him there. Alec tells Maurice that he has changed his mind because he does not want to leave Maurice. Maurice and Alec are now together again.
