Known as a premier writer on apartheid and post-apartheid era South African life, Athol Fugard has many other works with similar themes to “Master Harold”…and the boys. Readers interested in the relationship between white and black South Africans should consider his 1980 play Marigolds in August. A story of two black domestics and a white man with a catalytic presence, this play is similar in structure and content to “Master Harold.”

Another work on apartheid that is frequently used in classrooms is Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane. Like “Master Harold” Kaffir Boy is set during the height of apartheid and is based off of the author’s own personal experiences under the system.
