Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies Imagery

The train scene

The train scene depicts a sense of sight to readers. Lia gets into a trait, and she takes her seat. A man beside her tries to grope her breasts intentionally, but Lia seems undisturbed. Lia's breasts were removed due to cancer, but the man did not know the woman he had just touched did not even bother to react. The imagery shows Lia's silent suffering despite leading a normal life. Lia's body is no longer spectacular because she does not enjoy what other people enjoy.

Painting and poetry

Iris is a determined daughter to keep her mother alive despite her worsening situation daily. To ensure her mother is comfortable, Iris uses painting to show different hopeful images to help her mother keep her memory alive. Iris also uses poetry to sing for her mother, and she loves listening to her poems because that engages her brain and helps her to forget her suffering.

Lia’s past

The author uses imagery to describe Lia's past life that she did not want anyone to know at first. For instance, the author shows how the love between Lia and Mathew blossomed. When Mathew came home for the first time, he was handsome and physically fit, with attributes she could not resist. The description of the attributes that attracted Lia to Mathew depicts a sense of sight to readers to explain how Lia fell in love with a boy destined to be ordained. These secrets are slowly coming to light, and Lia thinks it is important for the truth to be revealed before she dies of cancer.
