We are never certain how Lady Macbeth dies, though Malcolm mentions his guess at the end of the play. Do you agree with Malcolm? How do you think she died? Why do you think so?
Most will probably agree that Lady Macbeth committed suicide, but the text never says so explicitly; in his last speech, Malcolm reveals that he believes she committed suicide. Why might he believe that. Students should cite the doctor's concerns—both in Act V, Scene 1 and those he unsuccessfuly attempts to express to Macbeth in Act V, Scene III—the meaning of her persistent sleepwalking, and the feelings of guilt she reveals in Act V, Scene 1.
