Love's Philosophy Background

Love's Philosophy Background

Published in 1819, "Love's Philosophy" is a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Shelley, the spouse of the Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein, originally published this poem through Leigh Hunt, a popular poet and writer of the time. It was later published in a posthumous volume of Percy Shelley's works that was edited by his wife.

"Love's Philosophy" uses many literary devices, and it's style is loosely based on Ancient Greek poems. The poem has a clear alternating rhyme scheme, and a consistent meter. Critics have received the poem very well, with multiple variations being published. In 1905, Robert Quilter set the poem to a tune, and the poem appears in some television, including the show Twin Peaks.
