Carolina “Lina” Emerson
Lina is the story's protagonist, and she is tasked with the responsibility of locating Howard in Florence, Italy. Her mother has cancer and asks her to fulfill her wish: locate Howard in Italy and live with him. At first, Lina does not understand why her mother is sending her to look for a strange man. However, Lina's grandmother tells her that Howard is her biological father.
When Lina arrives in Italy, she meets a woman who gives her journals her mother wrote many years while she was living in Italy. While reading the journals, Lina refuses to talk to Howard because she wants to know the truth about her biological father. Rez helps Lina understand the journal's hard concepts, and they conclude that Matteo is her biological father. However, when they confront Matteo, he denies the claims, leaving Lina disappointed.
Hardley Emerson
Herdley is Lina's biological mother, and she has cancer that is about to kill her. Before she dies, she asks Lina to travel to Florence, Italy, to trace Howard and live with him. Howard promises that he will take care of Lina, which gives Hardley confidence that her daughter will be in safe hands after she dies. While living in Florence, Italy, Hardley had affairs with different men. Therefore, Lina will have to explore Italy and find her father.
Howard Mercer
Howard Mercer is one of the men Hardley had a relationship with when she lived in Italy many years ago. Howard promised Hardley that he would care for Lina even if she was not his biological daughter. Therefore, when Hardley senses that she is about to die, she sends Lina to Italy to find Howard and live with him.
Lina’s grandmother
Lina's grandmother is a strong character because she gives Lina a hint that Howard is her father. Therefore, Lina gets the energy and motivation to travel to Italy despite her mother's health situation worsening. However, it later turns out that Howard is not Lina's biological father, but he accepts to take care of her.
Lorenzo “Ren) Ferrara
Lorenzo is the handsome guy Lina meets in Italy, and they quickly get attracted to each other. Ren plays a significant role in supporting Lina in reading her mother's journals and tracing Matteo Rossi. In the process, Lina falls in love with Ren, but she knows he is dating Mimi. Therefore, Lina is careful with the relationship because she knows Ren cannot be her boyfriend. After all, he has another girl. Towards the end of the story, Ren kisses Lina, and she confesses her love but refuses to accept his proposal. Ren is heartbroken because he just broke up with Mimi to be with Lina.
Mimi
Mimi is the girlfriend of Ren, and she does not know he is seeing another girl secretly. When Ren realizes Lina is the right girl; he breaks up with Mimi. Mimi is sad, and she hopes Ren will reconsider his decision and come back to her.
Matteo Rossi (Mr. X)
Matteo is the mysterious man that Hardley had a relationship with in her early days. When Ren and Lina read Herdley’s journal, she describes Matteo as Mr. X and is the one who impregnated her. Therefore, Lina is convinced that Matteo is her biological father. Matteo is a teacher at Fine Arts Academy, and Lina manages to locate him at last. When Lina introduces herself and inquires if he is her biological father, he denies it and says Hardley is delusional in her journals.
