    Objective:

    Students will place important narrative events throughout the novel's timeline.

    Structure:

    Lord Jim can be difficult to follow, given how frequently Conrad likes to shift the narrative. As our narrator, Marlow has a tendency to let his thoughts flow from one memory to the next, often with minimal prompting. For example, in chapter 13, we jump ahead three years to Marlow's meeting with the French lieutenant, followed by his meeting Jim in Samarang, before doubling all the way back to the night before Jim's sentencing.
