Written by author Max Barry, Lexicon (published in 2013) tells the story of an abnormal school that doesn't teach children math, science and history. Instead, they teach children how to use manipulate people's mind and ultimately control the mind. When the recruiters find Emily Ruff, they are very interested in her and decide to take her to the school. When in the school, Emily becomes known as the prodigy - she is talented and is adept at solving all of the challenges put in front of her. Still, she breaks the number one rule that is set up for kids: don't fall in love.
When released, Lexicon received positive reviews. Kirkus Reviews was one of the many publications that loved the book, saying that the book is "An up-all-night thriller for freaks and geeks who want to see their wizards all grown up in the real world and armed to the teeth in a bloody story." Another reviewer who liked the book said that it is "One of the smarter novels I've read this year, here is a very modern fantasy-thriller that grabs you from the beginning and never lets up."
