Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen Background

Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen, or Letters to Alice for short, is a book written by Fay Weldon and published in 1984. The novel is comprised of letters the are from a fictional character called "Aunt Fay", and are to Alice. Alice is a girl in school, who has a great interest in reading and writing, currently writing her own novel. The book was quite popular at the time it was written, even inspiring a June 30, 1985 New York Times article on it.

Fay Weldon was born in 1931 in England. Her family was quite literary, writing novels back two generations, and this inspired her to become a writer herself. Weldon has written around 50 published books, and is still writing to this day. She published an autobiography in 2002, and her latest book was, Death of a She Devil.
