Prominent children's and young-adult author Mildred D. Taylor was born in Mississippi in 1943. Her family moved to Toledo, Ohio when she was still an infant, but her father, who had grown up in Mississippi, remembered his childhood vividly and often took the family back down south to visit. The family stories that Taylor heard on those visits would become the inspiration for her series of novels about the Logan family. Like the Logans, Mildred Taylor's family purchased land in the late 1800s that her family owned for generations, and still owns to this day.
