Enid Mathews

Enid Mathews is the play's protagonist and a mother of two girls. The author depicts Enid as a loving, caring, and concerned mother who wants the best for her daughters. Enid is a first-generation immigrant in England, and her language and accent are quite different from those of her daughters, who are second-generation immigrants. Enid gave birth to all her two daughters in England. The daughters have adopted the English lifestyle, and they speak like Europeans.

Enid loves her daughters, but when she suspects Del has hidden secrets, she takes her to Mai, a seer, to uncover her secrets and heal her. Consequently, Enid is concerned about the safety of her daughters, and she is ready to sacrifice her life to ensure they are healthy and safe.

Del Mathews

Del is Enid's daughter and sister to Viv. Del is a secretive and curious person who wants to know everything happening around her. However, Del is clandestine and rarely talks about her problems openly. When Del's mother discovers she is suffering secretly, she takes her to a palm reader and seer to help her.

Viv Mathews

Viv is the daughter of Del and Del's sister. The author describes Viv as a brainy girl destined for greatness. Viv has excelled in her studies and is looking forward to joining the university. Viv is an excellent English speaker and aspires to become a great person. Unlike Del, Viv is determined to know her mother's birthplace and wishes to interact with relatives back in Jamaica.

Mai (Obeah woman)

Mai is the Obeah woman; a palm reader and seer who helps people discover their talents and know their problems. Similarly, Mai provides medication to those suffering from various diseases. Mai is also a family counselor. Paradoxically, the reader notes that Mai is a con woman because she prioritizes money before she gives any services. Sometimes, Mai's predictions and treatments are inaccurate, and she blames the outcome on the poor pay she receives from her clients.
