Last Sacrifice Background

Last Sacrifice Background

Last Sacrifice is the spell-binding conclusion to the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, and was published in 2010. The world that Mead has conceived revolves around a battle between the 'good vampires', otherwise known as Moroi, and 'bad vampires', known as Strigoi. Mead was intrigued by and researched Romanian folklore prior to writing the novel and based the series on traditional Romanian folklore on vampires.

The story concludes with Rose's quest to find Eric Dragomir's illegitimate child whilst also battling the attraction for her 'restored' lover, Dimitri, who claims that he is no longer able to love after enduring life as a Strigoi. At the same time Rose is escaping the authorities, who believe that she killed the late Queen Tatiana, and is trying to prove her innocence by investigating who the real murderer is.

Meanwhile, at Court, Lissa is trying to endure the tasks necessary to become the new Queen of the Moroi whilst also fighting off the ever-present feelings of depression that come along with her use of 'Spirit' magic.

The Vampire Academy series has sold over 8 million copies worldwide with Last Sacrifice making the New York Times Best Seller List, along with Mead's spin-off series, Bloodlines. It has been published in multiple foreign countries and recently Vampire Academy has been made into a movie, produced by Mean Girls director Mark Walters.
