Major Duncan Heyward is charged with protecting the Munro sisters, despite his best efforts to completely bungle this up. Despite Cora’s wondering about Magua, Heyward is completely confident in the Indian runner because of his previous service to the Crown. He continues to defend Magua even after being misled through the forest many miles out of the way from their destination. When Gamut joins their party, which itself may be seen as a lapse of judgment, it is Duncan who is reminded by Magua that the psalmodist should probably not sing loudly if they’re trying to be discreet.
