Laboring Women Irony

Laboring Women Irony

The irony of admiring indigenous women's strength in pregnancy

Throughout the story, a black woman is regarded as a laborer beast or wild woman. She is not comparable to the white woman in all aspects because her shape is wanting. Her breasts are described as hanging to the ground which makes her shape wanting. However, it is ironic that the same Europeans admire the black indigenous woman for her strength in pregnancy and her capability to maintain a pleasing body. The author writes:

"The passage conveys admiration for indigenous women's strength in pregnancy and their ability to maintain aesthetically pleasing bodies."

It is without a doubt that their white counterpart women are not able to deliver many children and at the same time maintain a pleasing body. The author uses this irony to demonstrate that the degradation of the black woman is an articulation by the white man to make a black woman feel inferior so that he can manipulate her as a laborer beast and an object of reproduction.

The Irony of a dangerous cannibal

Vespucci shows a lot of respect for indigenous women's reproductive hardness; however, it is ironic that at the end of his volume, he regards the same females as dangerous cannibals. Respect for a woman is supposed to be complete in all aspects if one decides to do so. However, it is contradictory that one can respect a woman's reproductive capability and at the same time consider such a woman as a dangerous cannibal.

"Despite his respect for female reproductive hardness, at the end of the volume Vespucci fixed the indigenous woman as a dangerous cannibal"

The irony of selling the Indian Spaniards as Slaves by the Spaniards

The Spaniards own the Indians slaves and consider them as inferior in all aspects. They call them shameless wretched creatures. However, it is ironic that some Spaniards have sex with these inferior women and even sire children with them. Similarly, it is ironic that they go ahead and sell their blood (Indian-Spaniards) as slaves.

"All the slaves that the Spaniards catch in these provinces are sent [to the Caribbean] and even when some of the Indian women are pregnant by these same Spaniards, they sell them without any consciences"

The Irony of sexually arousing woman

The Spaniards see an Indian woman as a dangerous cannibal because she has black teeth, sagging breasts and largemouth making her similar to a monster. She doesn't in any way resemble the white woman. Nevertheless, it is ironic that the same Spaniards view an indigenous Indian woman as sexually arousing.

"Because of her nakedness and monstrous adornments, the woman who opened Benzoni's narrative could not be familiar to conquistadors and colonizers, yet in a role as a mother, sexual victim, or even sexually arousing female she evoked the familiar."

The iron of regarding black with admiration

Almost all ancient English writers describe black women as ugly with sagging breasts and shapeless bodies. Ironically, Jobson, one of the ancient English writers regards black women with admiration.

"Unlike many of his contemporaries, Jobson regarded African women with admiration"

According to Jobson, black women have excellent bodies with nice features. This statement contradicts what the reader expects because every ancient English writer uses the black woman's body negatively to portray her as an inferior being.
