Day 3

Kurt Vonnegut's Short Stories Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Why does the Commodore dislike President John F. Kennedy so much in "The Hyannis Port Story"?

The Commodore dislikes the President almost entirely because he is their neighbor and he feels like he is in competition with him. Though he claims to be interested in policy, every time he explains the problems with Kennedy to the storm window salesman, he can't seem to stop mentioning petty complaints he has about the Kennedy's presidency's effect on his living situation. This is further shown in how demure he is when faced with the President, who asks that the Commodore turn on his Goldwater sign.

  2. 2

Discuss how politics is presented in "The Hyannis Port Story."
