Relationship to Other Books

Although not strictly the first adventure novel, Haggard is credited with writing the first "lost world" novel, which distinguishes itself from works like Gulliver's Travels by focusing more on archaeology, anthropology, and other sciences. Similarly-styled works include Arthur Conan Doyle's (appropriately named) The Lost World, James Hilton's Lost Horizon, and the 1933 film King Kong.
