King Lear Adaptations

Students will observe a variety of adaptations of the King Lear plot.

Structure:
The plot of King Lear has been adapted to a wide variety of different settings and media. In today's activity, the class is going to watch two very different retellings of the tale.
The first scene to show the class is from Akira Kurosawa's film Ran. Show the class the scene as the warlord tells of his plan to divide his kingdom between his three sons. (This scene begins at approximately 11:45 on the DVD and runs for ten minutes.)
