The gun
Dylan and Tim steal Ian's gun even though the two are unsure if they will go through with their plan to kill Ian. From time to time, the two look at the gun from where they hid it and marvel at it. The image of the gun is important for the two young men because it reminds them that they have power as well and that they have the power to stop the abuse.
The dead woman
The novel ends with Ian killing Kristy with the gun Tim and Dylan planned to use to kill Tim. Kristy's lifeless body is described on the floor of her own house, her eyes looking lively towards the ceiling. This shocking image is used to portray Ian's violent nature and the danger he poses is portrayed completely.
Lifeless girl
Towards the beginning of the novel, the narrator portrays Melanie, one of Kristy's daughters, lying lifeless in her bed, waiting for her father to come in and molest her. This image is petrifying and has the purpose of shocking the reader. At the same time this also transmits the idea that Ian has complete power over every person in the house even though he is no longer living there.
In the psych yard
The last image described in the novel is that of Dylan sitting inside the psych ward, restrained by a white jacket and completely alone. He became unable to take care of himself after his actions caused by his mother's death. This image is important because it shows just how much a person can be influenced by someone else's actions and how another person has the potential to ruin everyone around him extremely easily.
