Foreshadowing and Character Development in Julius Caesar 9th Grade
Thanks to a literary tool called foreshadowing, readers are not always surprised by important events or plot twists in literature. Foreshadowing is an effective way to hint to readers that a major plot point will happen. In Shakespeare’s tragedy Julius Caesar, foreshadowing is used to let readers know about the several deaths that are to come. These hints are not only signs to the reader that something significant is about to happen, but they also are meant to show how the different characters react to them and how their reactions affect the outcome of the story. In Julius Caesar, the titular character ignores several signs that he is going to be betrayed and killed. Through these signs, the readers are able to assume not only that Caesar will die, but also that Caesar is too proud to listen to these warnings. Caesar is not the only one that receives signs that future events will occur. Several other characters witness these signs too, and in turn, they also experience the repercussions. Therefore, foreshadowing is an extremely important tool utilized by authors not only to allude to future plot twists, but also to reveal much about the characters through their reactions to these signs.
