In the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, the author narrates the experiences of one seagull who is just learning how to fly. Jonathan Livingston is committed to flying and despite criticism from his family and friends, his passion does not waiver. He perseveres in hopes of perfecting this skill. Jonathan is bored with the daily struggles of life and the rules of the flock he expected to conform to. The flock clan seems to love their passion-less lives and discourages Jonathan who is already fed up with life and he relentlessly keeps pushing.
Jonathan does not conform to the norms and he is expelled from the flock. He is now a free outcast and he proceeds to train his flying. Jonathan meets this other seagull who shares the same passion of flying with him and they both fly to a place of higher awareness. As a distinguished gull, Jonathan goes back to the clan in a bid to teach them the skill of flying. Jonathan gives his training to seagulls that are interested in unlocking their unlimited freedom. This is described as an act of love, forgiving, sharing, and, kindness.
The overall theme expressed in this story is that regardless of what other people say or do to you, one should not be deterred from following their dreams and passions. Additionally, perfection is equally important. One should always strive to reach their full potential. Other themes expressed are the powers of forgiveness and freedom. In the end, Jonathan gets the utmost accolade, transcendence.
