“With ashes on her head,
Wept with the passion of an angry grief”
The lines from above are mentioned in the beginning of the poem soon after the narrator describes Abraham Lincoln as being a martyr for the country. Abraham Lincoln remains to this day one of the most loved American presidents in part because of his tireless fight against slavery. It is believed Lincoln was killed because of his desire to abolish slavery and this made him be a martyr who died for a cause he believed in. His actions also propelled him to a status akin to a saint and the general idea when it came to the late president is perfectly described in the rest of the poem.
“YES, faith is a goodly anchor;
When skies are sweet as a psalm”
The poem mentioned above analyzes the way in which death affects a person and the way in which they see life. Hope is described in the beginning of the poem as a way to deal with these negative emotions but as the narrator points out later in the poem, hope lasts for a relative short time before it disappears completely and gives way to despair and unhappiness. In this sense, the narrator refuses to believe hope is the answer to every problem a person may encounter in their lifetime and describes hope as being something which is extremely unreliable and short lived.
"One kiss from all others prevents me,
And sets all my pulses astir,"
In comparison with the other poems, “Agro-Dolce” is a poem about love and the way in which the narrator expresses the way in which love affected his everyday life. The narrator is affected by physical contact with the woman he loves and from the beginning of the poem the narrator admits a single kiss is enough to stir feelings of love. The quotes also shows just how love can change a person’s entire life and also the way in which a person’s perception about the environment and the whole world in general.
