Jaki Green's poetry often deals with youth and new things, and how they affect the people and things around them. One of her most well know poems, "Who Will Be the Messenger of This Land", asks the reader that very question - in this newly found expanse, who will take care of all of the new plants, animals and ideas there. Green's poems tend to evoke a sense of curiosity in readers, who are often left hanging by her style of fragmented writing.
In many of Green's works, there is a mention of a grandmother figure. This is important to connect to her own life, in which she had a very strong bond with her own grandmother. When she was just a child, her grandmother gave her a writing pad, and this, she claims, inspired her to become a writer. An American poet, Jaki Green is of African descent, and some of her work focuses on her unique culture. Green is still an active poet and writer today, after having received numerous awards for her works, many of which are not mainstream.
