Poppies

A type of bright, red flower.

Parapet

During WWI, parapets were the section of the trench facing the enemy.

Sandbag

A sack filled with sand or soil. These were used during WWI inside the trenches to protect the soldiers.

Shell

A projectile or type of ammunition.

Trench

A long, narrow ditch where soldiers would shelter and fight during war.

Strewn

Thrown chaotically around.

Sombre

Deeply sad.

Sinister

Something harmful, evil or threatening.

Anguished

Experiencing great grief or physical pain.

Hark

A command to listen.

Larks

Small birds, known for their beautiful songs.

Racketed

Moved loudly, in a way which interrupted others.

Sceptre

A staff or wand that symbolizes power.

Pyre

A pile of wood, used during cremation.

Ichor

In Greek mythology, Ichor is the blood that flows in the veins of Gods.

Shrapnel

Fragments of a bomb or explosion.

Impetuous

Acting quickly and impulsively, without thinking about the consequences.
