Chapter 16
April 15, 1992 - July 3rd, on the Stampede Trail nearly Healy, Alaska. Chris is in the bush, living at the Magic Bus, shooting game, reading Thoreau and Tolstoy, and writing journal entries (113 in total). He climbs a mountain; he seems happy. He shoots a moose but then fails to cure it because of his back-country naivete, which causes him great grief. Come August, McCandless tries to hike out. Krakauer suggests that perhaps he has mellowed and is ready to forgive his father. But the Teklanika river is more flooded than when he crossed it initially, and he is unable to go home. He returns to the bus.
