Into the Wild (2007 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Bus

Christopher finds and abandoned bus in the middle of the wild in which he lives. It is a symbol of what man leaves behind as waste can become new again when one chooses to inhabit it.

Nature

We watch as Christopher wells up with tears at the site of animals in the wild coming near him. This is a symbol of the great impact of nature upon one's heart and life when we allow ourselves to be with it, disconnected from the worries and stresses of our modern lives.

Feel Strong

Christopher goes for a swim in the ocean with a young woman even though he is scared of the water. This is a symbol of Christopher choosing to feel strong even when he doesn't want to be strong.

Books

Christopher is selling books and Tracy comes up to tell him that she likes to read books. This is a symbol of a connection the two have. While it comes from different directions, she is metaphorically buying what he's selling.

Reno

Jan asks Christopher if his parents know where he is. This is a symbol of her deep knowing what it is to not know where your child is as she hasn't heard from her son Reno in years.
