Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth Quotes

Quotes

"My vulva, the horn,

The Boat of Heaven,

Is full of eagerness like the young moon.

My untilled land lies fallow."

Translated by Diane Wolkstein

Inanna is a beautiful young virgin goddess when she meets Dumuzid who becomes her husband. She is eager and ripe to consummate their marriage, representing her allure in connection with the glory of heaven, her kingdom.

"After she had crouched down and had her clothes removed, they were carried away. Then she made her sister Erec-ki-gala rise from her throne, and instead she sat on her throne."

Anonymous

Inanna is so powerful still, in her nakedness, that her sister readily cedes her place on the throne to Inanna. Although she has been reduced to her pure essence, Inanna is still dripping with royalty. She carries authority with which her elder sister cannot compete.

"They looked at her -- it was the look of death. They spoke to her -- it was the speech of anger. They shouted at her -- it was the shout of heavy guilt."

Anonymous

The Anna, the seven judges of the Underworld, lay their judgement against Inanna. Although their words are unknown, their tone is clear. They are mysterious beings who communicate Inanna's sentence through emotion and intonation, resulting in her death.

"Because lord Gud-gal-ana,

the husband of my elder sister holy Erec-ki-gala, has died;

in order to have his funeral rites observed,

she offers generous libations at his wake -- that is the reason."

Anonymous

Inanna tells the gatekeeper that she has arrived in Kur to attend her sister's husband's funeral. She is eager to mourn his passing and thus honor his existence. Additionally, there is the element entertainment and charity which she demands from her sister, as family.
