If I Survive You Background

If I Survive You, Miami-based author Jonathan Escoffery's short story collection, was published in 2022. The stories, which are interconnected and tell the story of the same family, examine the impact of racism, bad luck, and financial disaster on a family over several decades. The first story in Escoffery's collection follows Topper and Sanya, who decide to escape from Kingston, Jamaica, and go to Miami, Florida as violence caused by politics consumes their country. As their life progresses, however, they realize that America is not the dreamland they thought it was. Though each story focuses on Trelawny specifically, If I Survive You makes broader points about the immigrant experience and the experiences of people of color.

When it was published in 2022, If I Survive You received very positive reviews. In their overwhelmingly positive review of Escoffery's collection, for instance, NPR wrote that "If I Survive You is an extraordinary debut collection, an intensively granular, yet the panoramic depiction of what it's like to try to make it — or not — in this kaleidoscopic madhouse of a country."
