I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark Background

I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark is a biographical graphic book based around the notable legal career of the Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The book was written by Debbie Levy and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers on August 9th, 2018. Elizabeth Baddeley was the illustrator for the book.

The book aims to educate younger children about the many famous dissents that Ginsburg faced throughout her legal career. The title stemmed from the illustrations in the book, which shows Ginsburg using phrases such as, "I dissent", "I object", and "I do not concur!" in the court room when fighting her case. The book further focusses on Ginsburg’s family life, including her relationship with her husband, Martin, and her struggles in rising to the renowned lawyer she is today.

The book has been extremely well received, with Booklist stating "Baddeley and Levy [. . . .] demonstrate how disagreement can lead to meaningful discussion and doesn’t have to be personal.” Kirkus Reviews also commends the book and claims that it makes one “inspired to work for justice through the legal system."
