"Whenever you are on the edge of revealing something important in your past, you stall, voicing suspicions of my questions because you are afraid, because you are reluctant to face your past."
Dr. Brint obviously manipulates Adam during their session together. He accuses Adam of giving into his fear because he doesn't really care to bring hs memory back, but Adam clearly wants nothing more. He suspects the doctor is using him to get information about his father, so he keeps some details to himself. Nevertheless he must hear the doctor's warnings and gradually begins to doubt his own sanity.
"I am the cheese."
Adam identifies with the cheese from the song "The Farmer in the Dell" because the cheese is alone. Although Adam is confronted with his past by the doctor's questions, he is unable to make himself vulnerable by accepting this old identity. Instead he identifies with the lonely cheese, defiantly grounding himself as an outsider.
"I am riding the bicycle and I am on Route thirty-one in Monument, Massachusetts, on my way to Rutterburg, Vermont. . ."
Adam narrates his bicycle ride to the hospital in the first person. This narrative choice demonstrates both his independence and his comprehension of the situation. As the intiator of this trip, Adam is in control of his actions, yet he demonstrates multiple times throughout the trip that he's operating in the past, based off old memories.
"The package is for my father and nobody, nobody is going to take it away from me or prevent me from bringing it to him. I stand there like a tree. I will not bend. I will not give him the package. I am the package."
Although Adam demonstrates his resolution in this quotation, he also reveals a certain degree of detachment from himself. He identifies with the package, much like a baseball coach will tell the kids to identify with the baseball. It's a focus technique. But in Adam's case, he reveals a tenuous hold on reality in this statement because not only is the package a material object exterior to himself, he also knows that he won't be delivering it to his father because he knows his father is dead.
