Robert Neville
Lt. Col. Dr. Robert Neville is the protagonist in this film. He is the only non-infected human we see for the majority of the movie. His journey allows us to experience the isolation of a virus that seems to have wiped out the human race. He is motivated by his promise to cure the virus, which he made to his wife and daughter just before they were killed. He must endure countless trials as he experiments to save humanity, and keep himself and his German Shepherd, Sam, alive. Robert has lost faith in God after his family is killed, and nearly all the planet is wiped out, and must journey back to being able to trust other people in order to find his faith and fulfill his purpose.
Sam
Sam, or Samantha is Robert's German Shepherd, and his only connection to his wife and daughter who have been killed. She is loyal, and her companionship allows Robert to endure through the isolation he faces day to day. Her commitment to him, is unparalleled, and she shows us what it means to stand by someone through thick and thin.
Anna
Anna is a survivor of the virus that has claimed the lives of nearly the entire planet. Her character arrives with a young boy, Ethan just as Robert has lost his will to live. She believes God has told her what to do, and has led her and the boy to Robert. Her beliefs conflict with Robert’s at a critical point in the film, and carry the theme of faith that is throughout to it’s fruition.
Ethan
Ethan is a young boy who has survived the virus, and is traveling with Anna. It can be said that his character reminds us of the consequences that our children must endure in order to survive in the world we, as adults create for them to inherit.
