I Am Legend (Novel) Character List

Robert Neville

The main protagonist of the novel, Robert is a normal middle-class American citizen who ends up being the last known human survivor after the world transcends into the vampiric plague. He hunts the undead on a daily basis and struggles to survive. He is immune to the plague possibly due to being bitten by a vampire bat years earlier. He is also in severe grief of the family and life he lost to the plague.

Kathy Neville

The dead daughter of Robert. She was killed by the plague and as such her death haunts him, despite having very little mention of her in the book.

Virginia Neville

The wife of Robert, they were truly in love and had a loving middle-class family that was uprooted by the vampiric plague. She succumbed to the disease and rose as a vampire, causing her to attack Robert. Robert defended himself off her and ended up killing her to save himself. This guilt still resonates within him.

The dog

A stray dog that Robert befriends in order to absolve himself of the loneliness of the world he lives in. Robert begins to care deeply for the dog by providing it shelter and keeeping it fed. However the dog also succumbs to the plague and dies, thus leaving Robert truly alone once more.

Ben Cortman

Previously Robert's neighbor and funnyman, turned Vampire leader. He has unquenched longing for human blood and leads a pack of vampires to hunt Robert.

Ruth

An apparently un-infected human woman whom Robert comes across. Though initially suspicious of her, Robert begins to understand her despair and thinks he can relate to her. However, after taking a blood sample, it is revealed that Ruth is in fact infected but she was infected whilst she was alive (a living infected) so she can overcome the normal vampiric weaknesses of sun exposure, and thus present themselves as almost humans. She is desperate to make a ruling race of the living-infected.
