In 1987, a large storm hit England’s southern coast, where the poet Grace Nichols was living. This inspired her to write the poem “Hurricane Hits England,” in which a powerful storm sparks an epiphany for an unnamed speaker. Nichols characterizes the speaker as one who struggles with a sense of isolation from her current landscape and being away from her homeland.
The poem was first published in her 1996 book Sunris, which was awarded the Guyana Poetry Prize.
