Human Voices Irony

The irony of umbrella bombs

Umbrellas were designed to protect the user from rain and other airborne hazards. On the other hand, umbrella bombs, which share a name with umbrellas, were designed to kill and destroy.

The irony of the expensive French restaurant

In a time of turmoil, war, and poverty, Sam and his coworkers go to a very expensive French restaurant despite the tremendous poverty England is contending with. In such a time, readers wouldn't expect anyone (let alone a man with a modest salary and job) to go to such a fancy restaurant.

The irony of the will of the British people

Despite constant bombings, carnage, death, and economic hardship, the will of the British people is never broken. Otherwise, anyone else’s will would have been broken given the same conditions.

The irony of the BBC's position

The BBC takes the steadfast position that they will tell the British public the unvarnished truth during World War II. At the same time, they wished to keep the will of the British people strong.
