Hong Gildong jeon Summary

Hong Gildong jeon Summary

Part One

The high minister, Hong Mo, awakes from his sleep after a dream that seems to be an omen. He sleeps with a concubine and Hong Gildong is conceived.

In childhood, Gildong is given an excellent education, and he gains physical mastery in combat, philosophical mastery in his enlightenment, and he even gains magical powers. When an assassin attempts to murder Gildong, Gildong protects himself with martial artistry, and he decides to leave the Hong estate to see what else life might hold for him.

Part Two

Hong Gildong becomes an important leader in a criminal gang that acts as Robin Hood to their community, stealing from the very wealthy, and giving the money to the poorest of the land. They are caught by the emperor of that region, and Gildong exiles himself from those lands.

Part Three

In the new region of Yul, Gildong starts a new gang on the Island of Jae. There, he confronts the king and deposes him, installing himself as king of the Yul kingdom. He reigns over the Yul land as a good kind, beloved by the people, and as an unhappy second child himself, he gives no preference to the firstborn—all his sons are equal in his eyes.
