Speaker
This poem's speaker is also, not coincidentally, its only character. In a work about self-love and self-respect, the speaker's focus is on herself. Moreover, because "homage to my hips" is interested in exploring what it means to inhabit a body, the work remains laser-focused on the speaker's own experience of her body. This speaker is bold and confident, appreciative of herself regardless of external beauty standards and norms. At the same time, she is also thoughtful and thorough, paying close attention to details and mining a single image—that of her own hips—for every possible meaning. She is interested in herself in a way that is emotionally intense and enthusiastic, and, simultaneously, methodical and inquisitive.
