Based on Greek mythology, the events and characters in Hippolytus appear in many different works of literature through the ages.

Aphrodite is an important figure in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Homer’s epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey and, later, Shakespeare’s erotic narrative poem Venus and Adonis. Shakespeare’s retelling of the courtship of Aphrodite and Adonis was the most popular of all his works published during his lifetime.
