The satire of the protagonist’s promiscuity
The protagonist is a sarcastic character. For instance, while staying in a hotel, the protagonist sleeps with a married woman. When the woman's husband discovers that his wife is cheating on him, he comes to the hotel. The protagonist runs naked in the hotel to escape being caught. Later, the reader finds it satirical that the protagonist starts to be intimate with the receptionist.
The paradox of racism
Racism is futile when it comes to the narrator's determination to succeed in his authorship. When the narrator goes for a trip to the USA to promote his book, he is shocked to learn that blacks are mistreated because they are perceived as inferior. However, the narrator wants to prove everyone wrong. For instance, the narrator promotes his book, winning a national award. Therefore, racism should not prevent an individual from pursuing their dreams.
The irony of Soot
Soot is an emblematic character that represents resilience and perseverance. While in his local town, Soot is bullied because of his dark skin. However, Soot is determined to achieve his goals despite the discrimination. Besides discrimination, Soot lives in an environment that is violent and intimidating. Blacks are denied equal opportunities, but Soot remains focused and discovers his potential in the end.
The irony of the Kid
When the narrator first comes across the Kid, he thinks he is hallucinating. Ironically, the Kid is a real African who is struggling with racism and the unfair treatment of the people of color in America. The reader learns that the Kid is a symbolic figure to represent the repeated stories of the murder of the blacks by the white police officers. The authorities are silent about the murders, but the narrator investigates the atrocities against the blacks.
