Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque Quotes

Quotes

“Haunted houses, forbidden houses. The old Medlock farm. The Erlich farm. The Minton farm on Elk Creek.NO TRESPASSING the signs said but we trespassed at will. NO TRESPASSING NO HUNTING NO FISHING UNDER PENALTY OF LAW but we did what we please because who was there to stop us? Our parents warned us against exploring these abandoned properties; the old houses and barns were dangerous, the said. We could get hurt, they said. I asked my mother if the houses were haunted and she said, Of course not, there aren't such things as ghosts, you know that. ”

Oates, “Haunted”

The Caps-locked warnings are not deterrents to the children, who deliberately flout their parents' warnings not to trespass the farms. The children are curious to explore the farms. The narrator’s mother’s affirmation about the nonexistence of ghost encourages the narrator to explore the farms deliberately. Evidently, the notion concerning the veracity of ghost is subjective, some people believe in the existence of ghosts whereas others do not. If the narrator and other children were convinced about the haunting ghost, they would steer clear of the supposedly ‘haunted’ places.

“The dolls’ house as said to have been built nearly one hundred years before, by a distant relative of the girl’s mother. It had come down through the family and was still in excellent condition: with a steep gabled roof, many tall, narrow windows fitted with real glass, dark green shutters that closed over, three fire places made of stone, mock lightning rods, mock shingle board siding (white), a veranda that nearly circled the house, stained glass at the front door and at the first floor landing, and even a cupola whose tiny roof lifted miraculously away.”

Oates, “The Doll”

The house is a high-quality masterpiece, for it endures for a century. If it had been poorly constructed, it would degenerate effortlessly. Its components are a replica of a real classic house. Hence, it is a memorable souvenir for the little girl. The constructor paid attention into the details which make it a unique and worthy house. This house rises above the time by passing down through a number of generations.
