Hamnet Summary

Hamnet Summary

In the 1580s, Agnes Hathaway is the wife of William Shakespeare. He remains unnamed in the entire novel to give his wife the well deserved spotlight. While Shakespeare is in London, altering the course of literature as we know it today, Agnes stays behind in Stratford to care for the children.

Unknown to many, Agnes is a powerful spirit who possesses unimaginable precognition abilities. On top of that, she is a herbal healer who is in touch with nature on levels unknown to man. She is a gifted woman who is feared by many. Living in Henley street, Agnes has three kids; Susanna, Hamnet and Judith.

In 1596, Hamnet dies at eleven years old. His death devastates Agnes, who is overwhelmed by grief. She is unable to properly prepare for Hamnet's burial. Her husband grieves in his own way by writing a play called Hamlet in honor of his son.

Hamnet is a winding tale about Agnes's life from a young, beautiful girl to a grieving mother who cares deeply for her children. She is determined and will do whatever it takes for them. The novel is indeed a story of dedication and perseverance.
