Essay Questions

  1. 1

How does Herrera depict the Chicano experience in America?

Herrera often writes from personal experience, having lived as a Chicano in America himself. This being said, many of the stories reveal this experience from different perspectives; for example, one poem is about the child of an illegal farm worker in the US, and another is about a father struggling away from his children. As such, we see that Herrera discovers unique and interesting perspectives with which to illustrate his idea of the Chicano experience in America.

  2. 2

How does Herrera present the father in Half the World in Light?

In this poem, Herrera depicts a father-figure who is looking through his bag. In there, he finds pictures of his family who are "in another country," which represents his relationship with his family and his treasured memories. We are reminded that he is alone and struggles away from his loved ones, but makes this sacrifice in order to provide for his family.
