Half the Sky

Half the Sky Analysis

The story is based on the oppression experienced by women in some parts of the world. Through several case studies, the authors detail the cruelty endured by women in the hands of rogue men. Females, particularly in third world nations, are exposed to early prostitution due to poverty. These women are then forcefully taken into brothels where they are forced to work as sex workers. Those who attempt to resist are beaten up and drugged. At brothels, they are not permitted to use condoms leading to the acquirement of STDs like HIV/AIDS.

Kristoff and WuDunn note that women trafficked for sex are gagged by either their family members or community. In short, they are not permitted to raise their concerns for fear of bringing shame to the family. Women in developing countries are also subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM). Some traditions in Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia like FGM are oppressive. FGM may bring complications while giving birth leading to death. Governments in these countries have failed to invest in healthcare and education for the girl child.

The authors conclude by suggesting actions that need to be taken to prevent the oppression of the girl child. Such can be attained by supporting brave women who speak out and resist those practices. Women should be empowered economically to become independent. Moreover, they should be educated to understand the dangers of such vices. Policies should be put in place to make sure that females are treated with the utmost respect.
