Hadji Murat

Hadji Murat was a naib, famous for his ruthlessness during the Caucasian holy wars against imperial Russia. He was a Caucasian warrior who was formerly the Russian-appointed governor of Avaria and currently Shamil’s chief representative in Russia. He has black eyes, shaved head, sun burned hands, muscular arms, and a limp which he received this limp while escaping from Akhmet Khan. He has many different personality traits that range from very intimidating to very kind.

Shamil

Shamil was the tribal leader of the Caucasian Muslim warriors. He was very tall, powerful and charismatic. He holds Hadji Murad’s family and loved ones captives and threatens them so he can draw Hadji to where he is so that he can kill him.

Prince Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov

This prince is one of the major commanders of the Russians. His wealth and connections enable him to be a great leader. He was vital to the plot because he is the only Russian commander that Hadji Murad listened to. Although Vorontsov does not fulfill Hadji Murad's every desire and command, he does let Hadji Murad move freely about Russia in search of his family.

Nicholas I of Russia

A very lethargic and bitter Tsar of Russia. He is very egotistical and mistreats women and those that are close to him, and is shown to be a poor decision maker and leader.

Petrukha Avdeyev

A young Russian soldier that died local military hospital after being shot outside the fortress He had no children and volunteered as a conscript in place of his brother who had a family of his own, thereby choosing the "harder life."

Khan Mohama

One of Hadji Murat's men, Khan Mohama is somewhat irreverent compared to the serious Murat. He is described as joyful, with a round face, black eyes, and a wide beaming smile. Khan Mohama lives recklessly, and would switch back and forth between the Russian and Caucasian sides if it served his sport.

Gomzalo

Gomzalo is a Chechen and another of Hadji Murat's men. He has a red beard and is blind in one eye, disfigured by a scar on his face. Gomzalo is a stricter Muslim than many other characters, and maintains a distrust of all Russians. He is a faithful believer in Shamil.
