Godric Summary

Godric Summary

The main character of Godric is, you guessed it - Godric. Godric is a man that acquired a large fortune in an unknown way, but this acquisition was dishonest. Godric, with the money, indulges himself in pleasurable activities and lives a life of sin.

That is, until God interferes with his life. Through local people and especially saints, God sends him messages, telling him that the life he is living is wrong and sinful. Eventually, Godric gives up his fortune and lives his life as a hermit. He lives by a river, where he lives to be about one hundred rich years old.

Born to a peasant family, the book begins in the childhood of Godric. He has two younger sibling, and all three of them remain close friends. When Godric is almost killed by ocean waves, his sister becomes even more attached to him. Eventually, Godric wants to leave for the real world, but his sister threatens to kill herself if he goes. He goes.

Godric becomes a somewhat successful merchant, but things go awry when there is a riot at the church. One person is killed, and dies in Godric's arms. After the riot, facts are twisted, and it is told that this person died honorably. Godric sells remnants with the man's blood, and forges more with cat blood.

On a visit to Rome, Godric gets a visit by a mystical woman named Gillian. She urges him to follow the path of God. Other encounters like this follow, and Godric starts to wonder if selling the remnants of the attack have anything to do with this.

Godric decides to become a member of the church, and becomes educated on the Bible. He secures a home and plot of land from the church, and lives a happier life without sin.
