As mentioned above, "Gimpel the Fool" was published in a collection of stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer of the same name. Singer wrote twelve other short story collections, most notably A Crown of Feathers and Other Stories. Singer also wrote 19 novels, 19 children's books, and several autobiographies. Six of his works of fiction have been adapted into plays, movies, or operas—most notably, his short story "Yentl the Yeshiva Boy" became Yentl, a 1983 film starring Barbra Streisand.
Other Jewish writers, including those writing in Yiddish, from the 20th century whose work has been influenced by and compared to Singer's include Chaim Grade, Cynthia Ozick, Jacob Glatstein, and Saul Bellow.
