George Crabbe: Poems Themes

Procrastination

Seen the poem of the same name, procrastination is not a good trait to have. Often, you will wait too long, and you will never have the opportunity again to do what it is you initially wanted to do. This is what happens to the narrator of the poem, who realizes that his wife no longer loves him after he was away from her for such a long time.

Alcoholism

Alcohol and drugs alike affect the human mind in negative ways, and this is a large point that Crabbe tries to show in many of his poems. Perhaps he or someone he knew had a problem with alcohol, but it is for sure that he hopes no one will have to suffer from being an alcoholic. In one of his poems, he specifically describes the evils of alcohol, and how it will warp the mind.

Losing Love

An overwhelming amount of poems written by George Crabbe follow the same or similar plot line - someone is in love with another, but that other person has an affair with someone else. This does, indeed, happen often in real life, but it is evident that Crabbe wants to show it is wrong, if not natural. Some of his poems about losing love happen when the narrator is gone for a long time, and the lover simply becomes lonely. Crabbe explains that if you truly love someone, you will wait for them forever to return.
