Narrator
The narrator is George Chauncey, who narrates the origin of gay culture in America and its influence on the contemporary world. The gay culture started between the years 1890 and 1940. Over the years, Chauncey notes that several things have changed. For instance, he argues that in the contemporary world, people of the same sex can come out publicly and declare their sexual identity without stigma.
Gay men
Gay men are the group of people who prefer same-sex relationships. The gay men created their own space and named it 'gay world,' which took the globe by storm. Before coming out publicly, gay men lived in secrecy and did not want anyone to know their sexuality. However, the creation of the gay world brought a new momentum of self-identification and acceptance.
Sailors
The sailors are a group of men working on the high seas and working class. The sailors were masculine men who had sex with fairies and were considered gay. These sailors spent most of their time away from their wives and children. However, the sailors are human and experience sexual urges, which they satisfy through intimacy with the fairies.
Middle-Class people
Middle-class people are a group of individuals shocked by the emerging same-sex relationships between the years 1910 and 1930s. The middle class was anxious to comprehend the gender transformation that was quickly taking shape. The middle class was an enlightened group of people who closely monitored any transition that took place around. Of all the transformations, gay culture was the greatest shock that surprised many.
Authorities
The authorities are the legal entities that tried to regulate the gay culture that was becoming a menace among the people who viewed that voice as evil. Unfortunately, the gay movement gained more popularity and strength to demand their rights. The impartiality of the government became evident when the gay people demonstrated that they are human and have similar rights to any other citizen. However, the government turned a blind eye and ensured that it enforced strict laws against gay culture, but that did not last long.
Public
The general populace forced gay men to get out of communal spaces and do their activities in unknown places. The tension between gay men and the public escalated over time. The traditions and culture dictated that sexual relationships must be between a man and a woman. However, the gay culture disrupted the norms because men wanted to marry fellow men. Consequently, the public did not take the gay culture lightly because it potentially eroded societal moral values observed for centuries.
