Gather Imagery

Gather Imagery

Hearing

Gather's woofing depicts the sense of hearing in the novel. Mathew says, "So I push the junk door shut with my foot and let Gather out the back kitchen door. But he runs around and greets Aunty Terry with a big woof." The imagery is significant because it shows Gather's joyfulness, friendliness, and companionship. Whenever Gather greets one of the family members, he woofs to attract the attention of the person he greets.

Sight

The description of the fridge, when Mathew gets out of school, depicts a sense of sight. Mathew says, "When I got home from school, I was so hungry; my stomach was pretty much just eating itself. But the fridge was empty except for the jars in the door, the same stained labels I'd been looking at since my gram moved away." The imagery has a deep meaning because it shows how Mathew misses his mother, who always ensures the fridge is full. Mom ensures Mathew never gets hungry, but the situation is different since she was hospitalized.

Taste

The sense of taste is depicted when the narrator describes his mother's cooking recipe. The narrator says, "It's just got the two pieces of crust, but no mould, which is kind of surprising. So, beach-nuts. They taste great with apples. Gram, used to add spice. Cinnamon, I think.” The imagery reminds readers that Mathew is lonely because he misses his mother’s food; he clearly describes the recipe that makes the food tasty.
