Gardening in the Tropics Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The Tree of Life

In the poem with the title "The Tree of Life’’, the narrator presents a mythological version of the creation of agriculture. The Tree of Life in the poem is an ancient tree planted on this Earth by the Creator in the beginning of times. The Tree produced every crop a person needed to survive and to enjoy life but at one point in history, the Creator ordered the tree to be cut down and small branches to be planted instead. As a result, agriculture was born and humans found a new way to get food, namely by planting it and cultivating different types of crops. The narrator uses the tree to argue that mix farming is the way things were supposed to be. Mono farming is criticized through this poem and presented as being unsustainable. Thus, the Tree of Life becomes a symbol for the benefits of planting different types of crops at the same time.

Symbol for female empowerment

In the poem "Amazon Women’’, the narrator praises the strong women which exist in his country, some of which took over male roles when their husbands and partners were no longer by their side. The narrator offers a few names of women which existed in history and who are known because of their achievements as well as the Amazon women, the tribe of women who were independent and who lived without needing a man in their tribe. The Amazon women become a symbol in this poem, being used to suggest female empowerment and strength.

Symbol for love

The poem "Tropic Love’’, the narrator discusses the relationship she has with her partner and how she no longer feels appreciated by him. the poem starts with the woman mentioning how the man stopped bringing her flowers but as the poem progresses it is clear that the woman is enraged not because of the lack of flowers but rather because her husband no longer takes care of her family. Thus, the flowers are used here to symbolize love and one’s desire to take care of his family from a financial point of view.

The old woman

In the poem "The Immovable Tenant’’, the main character is an old woman who suffered because she was fooled into selling her apartment. The woman is described as being ancient by the narrator and as having had a hard life until then. After the woman realized she was influenced into doing something which affected her life on a deep level, she made it her personal mission to warn everyone about what happened to her. The old woman becomes in this sense a symbol, representing the old wisdom which has the power to change the lives of the younger generation.

Women taking back the power

One of the common motifs in the poems is the idea that women take the power back from the oppressive men from their lives. This motif is most present in the poem "Amazon Women’’ where the narrator describes a whole nation of women who lived without any men in their lives. Then, in the poem "Tropical Love’’, the narrator is a woman who decides to break off the relationship with her partner because he did not perform his job as a partner and probably a husband.
