Gang Leader for a Day Summary

Gang Leader for a Day Summary

Sudhir gets a position shorty after he graduates, where he is supposed to study how young black people are affected by different factors in various neighborhoods. He then decides to become a part of the black society, instead of reading history books on the subject.

Sudhir goes to one of the gangs in Chicago, the Black Kings, and begins to “hang out” with them, after they realize that he came with peaceful intentions. He experiences the different sides of life in a gang; prostitution, drug trades and beatings of gang members. At the same time, he notices the softer part of life, the hope and connection they have with their fellow gang members, and the Mom’s role in their lives.

One day, after observing the job the gang leader did, JT, he was permitted to try being the gang leader for a day. He experienced the hard decisions a gang leader must make, quite like the job of a CEO, having meetings, and keeping the gang-members in line.

Sudhir was surprised when he realized how similar the structure of a gang was to a regular American business. He also witnessed several meetings between different gangs, and how they communicated with each other to solve the problems they met at a daily basis. Sudhir kept track of the gangs, and posted several articles involving his research, and supposedly keeps in close contact with JT.
