Handsome guardsman
The personages have beautiful appearance in this vampire novel, especially dhampir Dimitri. Rose is always nearly out of her mind, when she meets him. His “long, lean body, obvious even while sitting, bottomless dark eyes and shoulder-length brown hair, which is tied back at his neck”, force Rose to admire him. His “hair feels like silk” and Rose had an opportunity to run her fingers through it. Dimitri is an ideal of the charming and handsome man for Rose. His image is close to ideal.
Enigmatic Badicas’ house
When Rose, Dimitri and Arthur visit Badicas’ house, the image of weather plays as a background foreshadowing events. Standing on the driveway, Rose glances up at the sky. “The light is bleak and watery. Noon. The sun's highest point today”. She could enjoy the sun’s rays, because she isn’t a vampire. “Icicles hung from the eaves, and the tinted windows revealed no secrets”. And “the half-buried in the snow silver stake” indicates that there was a fight. It is really strangely to find a stake here, because it is “the most deadly weapon”. There is a feeling of danger, mysticism and coldness near this house and weather image strengthens this atmosphere.
Gothic style
The school for vampires is very huge and fascinating. The commons building large and “gothic-looking more suits to a medieval movie set than a school”. This school also reminds the house of Badicas with its historical architecture. The air of mystery and ancient history continues to involve in the building: “elaborate stone walls and antique paintings warring with computers and fluorescent lights. Modern technology has a foothold here, but it doesn’t dominate”. This school is an inspiration for those students, who really like different gothic and historical things.
Rose’s mother
Although Rose’s mother has another missions and she is always on the move, Rose doesn’t hate her. She misses her very much and understands her difficult work of dhampir. When her mother shows up for the holidays, “she has on jeans and a beige T-shirt, covered with what has to be the most boring denim jacket Rosa has ever seen”. The woman is of small stature; “only five feet tall”. “She is dwarfed by the other guardians, but she has a presence and way of standing that makes her seem taller”. This woman is very bewitching, but Rosa inherited father’s appearance. Her mother’s appearance description is important as helps to understand their similarities but at the same time shows how different they are.
